KAZAKHSTAN has released Umit, an Amur tiger whose name means “Hope” in Kazakh, into the unfenced Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve, marking a historic step in the effort to restore wild tigers to Central Asia, where the species disappeared more than 70 years ago.
Conservationists hope the ambitious reintroduction program will eventually establish a thriving wild tiger population across its former range.
