Optimism was soaring at the Austrian ambassador Wolfgang Oliver Kutschera’s residence in Islamabad on Monday he had hosted a grand live screening of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group-stage match between Austria and Argentina drawing diplomats, senior government officials, UN representatives and friends for an evening celebrating the spirit of the beautiful game.
The football enthusiasts gathered for a blockbuster FIFA World Cup 2026 clash between Austria and Argentina. Riding the momentum of a commanding opening victory over Jordan, Austria entered the contest with belief in their boots and dreams of a giant-killing upset. However, it was Argentina’s star-studded squad — powered by the enduring brilliance of Lionel Messi — that emerged victorious, leaving Austrian supporters applauding the effort while keeping their World Cup hopes alive.
The event marked Austria’s second appearance in the World Cup and the second screening organized by the ambassador after the successful viewing of Austria’s opening match against Jordan. The Austrian residence was transformed into a football arena as guests gathered to watch one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures.
Among those attending were Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik, Ambassador of France Nicolas Galey, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker, Ambassador of Jordan Dr. Maen Khreasat, ILO Country Director Geir Thomas Tonstol, UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Yahya, Poland’s Acting Ambassador Piotr Konat, Germany’s senior diplomat Jan Gerald Krausser, Pakistan Observer’s digital team lead, Abdullah Gauhar Malik, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders and sports enthusiasts.
Welcoming the guests, Ambassador Kutschera said Austria’s return to the FIFA World Cup after a 27-year absence was a moment of immense pride for the Austrian people. He expressed hope that guests would enjoy the match, the dinner and Austria’s renowned hospitality.
The ambassador also acknowledged the challenge posed by defending world champions Argentina, noting that Lionel Messi remained in outstanding form and could prove a decisive factor in the encounter. He struck an upbeat tone, describing the match as an opportunity for Austria to measure itself against one of the world’s elite footballing sides.
It was a live match-cum-dinner reception and the guests were served an elaborate buffet featuring Austrian and Pakistani delicacies, desserts and refreshments before kickoff, creating a festive atmosphere that continued throughout the evening.
