DHAKA: Seven associates of Sheikh Hasina have been sentenced to death in Bangladesh for crimes against humanity.
According to foreign media reports, a three-member bench of the International Crimes Tribunal delivered the verdict. The convicts faced charges of crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 popular uprising.
All seven individuals sentenced to death are fugitives currently residing in India; among them is Obaidul Quader, the former General Secretary of the Awami League. The court also ordered the confiscation of half of the fugitive convicts’ assets. The confiscated assets will be awarded to the affected families as compensation.
The tribunal ordered the confiscation of half the assets of Obaidul Quader, Nasim, Arafat, and Prash—assets to be distributed as reparations among the families of those killed or injured during the July uprising.
It is worth noting that last November, the same tribunal had also sentenced Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity and the bloody crackdown used to suppress the 2024 public protests. According to United Nations figures, at least 1,400 people were killed and thousands injured due to violence perpetrated by Hasina Wajid’s security forces and Awami League operatives.
