LAHORE: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted a heat wave in Punjab starting from the end of April and continuing till June, with temperatures likely to rise significantly above normal.
The rising mercury could trigger heatwave conditions in southern Punjab and several other areas.
According to the PMD’s weather outlook, temperatures are likely to remain above average till May 2026.
April is expected to be slightly warmer, with temperatures 1 to 2 degrees above normal, while May could see a further 2 to 3 degrees rise. Temperatures could reach 45-46 degrees Celsius in some parts of the province by June.
In big cities like Lahore, citizens may feel the effects of the heatwave more intensely, with temperatures likely to range between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius in May.
The PMD defines a heatwave as any period with temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius or above. Prolonged exposure to such conditions can exacerbate the risks.
Officials have warned that temperatures could approach 38 degrees Celsius by the end of April, with severe heat waves more likely in May and June, potentially exceeding 44 degrees Celsius in June and July.
