Russia carried out one of its largest overnight aerial assaults on Ukraine, launching around 90 missiles and nearly 600 attack drones in a coordinated strike targeting energy facilities, military sites, and major cities. Ukrainian authorities reported explosions across several regions as air defense systems worked to intercept incoming threats. Residential buildings, transport infrastructure, and power grids were damaged, while emergency crews responded to multiple impact sites.
Particular attention has focused on reports that Russia used the “Oryzhnik” hypersonic missile system during the attack. Hypersonic weapons travel at extremely high speeds and are difficult for conventional air defenses to stop, raising concerns about further escalation in the war.
Ukraine said many drones and missiles were intercepted, though some penetrated defenses due to the scale of the barrage. Western governments strongly condemned the strikes and reaffirmed support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.
