Tokyo: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake has caused widespread destruction in Japan, killing 13 people and injuring more than 50 in various accidents.
The powerful tremors of the earthquake have damaged dozens of buildings and derailed several trains. After this devastating earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, a gas leak caused an explosion in a shopping mall called “Aeon Kumamoto”, resulting in the collapse of the second floor and roof, leaving a large part of the building in a pile of rubble.
The earthquake has suspended bullet train services, closed the runway at Kumamoto Airport and severely affected the telecommunications system. In addition, dozens of flights have been canceled at Tokyo Airport.
More than 61 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquake, while authorities have expressed fears of more tremors.
Japanese Prime Minister Sana Takaichi has declared a state of emergency, ordering citizens to evacuate immediately, and a high alert has been issued for seven prefectures.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has withdrawn its initial tsunami warning, but the risk of more severe aftershocks remains for the next week.
