TEHRAN: The presidents of the United States and Iran have electronically signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war, after which the agreement has come into force.
The White House and Iran have confirmed that President Trump has signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war with Iran.
According to the American website, the presidents of the United States and Iran have electronically signed the memorandum of understanding. The agreement was originally supposed to be signed in Switzerland on Friday, but a diplomat from a mediator country and another source said yesterday that talks were underway between the parties to complete the process earlier and start implementation soon.
According to the diplomatic source, the aim of this development was to open the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible because both sides had already agreed on this issue. One reason for this process may be the increasing political pressure on the White House to release the text of the agreement.
On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai announced that the text of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States has been officially signed and immediate negotiations will begin to finalize the implementation mechanism of the agreement.
According to Esmail Baqai, there will be no negotiations with any party on Iran’s defense capabilities and missile program. He said, “Iran’s missiles are only for firing, not for negotiations.”
The spokesman clarified that Iranian nuclear material will not be sent out of the country, but there is an option to lower the enriched uranium. He said that the documents in Persian and English are consistent with each other and the other party has also signed the memorandum.
He said that under the agreement, the other party will not increase its military presence in the region during the next 60 days or impose new sanctions on Iran. Baqaei stressed that the oil sanctions imposed on Iran must be lifted and that Iran must be able to start selling oil immediately, while this situation must remain for at least 60 days.
According to Esmail Baqaei, the US will be obliged to remove all obstacles to access to Iran’s frozen funds. He added that the issue of the Strait of Hormuz is a joint responsibility of Iran and Oman, while any attack on Lebanon by Israel will be considered a violation of the agreement.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that the 60-day period begins today.
