TEHRAN: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif attended the funeral prayers of the late Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, in Tehran on the invitation of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian.
Ayatollah Khamenei was martyred during attacks on Iran on February 28, 2026.
The prime minister led a high-level Pakistani delegation comprising Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and other senior government officials.
On the solemn occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz paid tribute to the late Iranian leader’s services for Islam, saying that he guided the Iranian nation for decades with extraordinary vision, wisdom and foresight.
The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s complete solidarity with the new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Syed Mujtaba Hosseini Khamenei, President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian and the people of Iran over the national tragedy. He also prayed for the forgiveness and elevation of the departed leader’s ranks.
A parliamentary delegation led by Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, along with parliamentarians and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, also attended the funeral with the prime minister.
After attending the funeral prayers, Prime Minister Shehbaz, who arrived in Tehran earlier in the day, departed for Istanbul on an official visit to Türkiye.
