ISLAMABAD: International Women’s Day is being celebrated all over the world, including Pakistan. The aim is to raise awareness against gender discrimination and to stop the oppression of women.
International Women’s Day was first celebrated in the United States on February 28, 1909, after the announcement of the Socialist Party of America. Among other historical occasions, this day is also celebrated in memory of the fire that broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York in 1911. The idea of celebrating International Women’s Day first came up at the beginning of the 20th century, when women protested against unfair working conditions. This day is also celebrated today at the United Nations level.
The sad fact is that in many countries of the world, including the United States, women are still considered inferior to men. Women are not paid equal salaries to men. Even in the United States, which is called the pioneer of women’s rights, women are paid 20 to 40 percent less than men and are forced to do equal work. The condition of women in developing countries is even more critical. Looking at the background of Women’s Day, women in the United States protested against their salaries and work problems. In 1908, the Socialist Party of America established the “Women’s National Commission” to solve women’s problems. Since then, this day has been celebrated as International Women’s Day.
